UNICEF needs help against food crisis in Africa

10 million people on the Horn of Africa are affected by a food crisis caused by the worst drought in years. Especially children are threatened by starvation. Almost half a million children are at the risk of death if not provided with food, clean water and medicine, soon.

UNICEF asks for support to help save the lifes of starving children in the affected regions of Eritrea, Djibuti, Ethiopa, Somalia and Kenya. Donations can be made through their dedicated support site at

where you can learn more about the drought and food shortage and what UNICEF and other NGO's are doing to help.

NB: As a matter of fact, we would have liked to hold an Air-Child charity event for fund raising, as we did in the past with desasters in Haiti or Pakistan. But we don't want to hide the fact that we could not collect sufficient funds, this time. Sad but true. So, all we can do is to appeal to those who can afford some Euros, Dollars or other currency to

I am leaving and will be on vacation for 2 weeks but upon return I plan to fly with the Lockheed L-100 to Mogadishu carrying humanitarian aid. I'll match this symbolic flight of hope with a real-life donation to UNICEF.

I thought other fellow pilots may like the idea and want to do the same.

Hello

We (me and my wife) also decided to make some donation. And also I want to make fly with himanitarian aid, but I don't see any flightplan to ethiopia? does anything is going to be prepared?

Will fly a C130 Cargo flight from Nairobi (HKJK) to Mogadishu (HCMM) in support, plus donate via the UNICEF site.

As the situation is growing worse each day, help will be needed for a long time, if not permanently. The drought has struck there almost any of the past years, and it won't get better with the climate change.
I still hope we can manage to hold a charity event later that year.
 
More people in the flightsim community are trying to help. A very nice idea comes from VATSIM member Andre K. Aepfelbach who sells virtual passenger seats in his Twin Otter for a charity flight on Vatsim. Ticket prices are from 5 to 10 €, the money goes to Terres des Hommes and Médecins Sans Frontières. Andre invites everyone to join him on his charity flight on August 14.

Dear All

as planned, I am flying my L-100 with 31 tons of virtual humanitarian aids from Rome Ciampino (LIRA) to Mogadishu (HCMM). Today I made the first leg of this flight - see PIREP of flight ACH7630. I plan to land in Mogadishu tomorrow or shortly thereafter. For each virtual ton carried, I'll donate 1 € to UNICEF. I'd be glad to continue these charity flights if other sponsors show up.

hello Giuseppe

I also have made some donation, but I'm flying with FSPassengers set in economical mode so I've to buy some cargo aircraft. I want to buy 737-700C but it's gonna take some flights to earn money. I'm an economist so I likeI like to have an economic factor in my games this gives me more fun. I just can't wait till our CEO give's us those economic modes in air-child.

Of course Rafal, everyone helps as he can... I noticed there is another L-100 in Mogadishu at the moment, it would be nice to see these heavyweights fly back and forth from rich countries to Somalia and Ethiopia, carrying virtual supplies matched by some real euros for UNICEF. Even nicer would be to see our rich countries send those planes for real, but experience shows that our governments are quicker to join another war than to save lives.
