I finally managed to preset the login form on the separate login page. If you're logged into the VA you can now use either the form on the bottom of the index page or the separate login and just click "log in" (or whatever that button is labelled).
I've also set the board time to UTC (was UTC+1 before). This makes more sense, since the VA clock displays UTC too.

Edit: just noticed that the time setting is also stored in each user's board settings (via user control panel). so don't be confused if it still says something different from utc
